Description

On April 15th 2017, over 100 people gathered at dusk by the foot of the towers on Southmere Lake, Thamesmead, London. The purpose was to make a large-scale photographic portrait of South Thamesmead and those who live there, as a collaborative undertaking with current residents. Through working with residents to feature in an image of their own place and community, and significantly, in the manner of their own choosing, we made a portrait of a neighbourhood on the cusp of change. Thamesmead is an estate that is instantly recognisable to many. This recognition is largely a fictionalised version of a complex mix of architectural histories and varied social forces. The intention was that through a process of consultation, invitation and staging, this project will make another kind of representation of this place.

This is the tenth Crowd Theory project by artist Simon Terrill.

Funded by Arts Council England, with additional support from Peabody Thamesmead.
